Gov. Ron DeSantis gave a pretty straight answer in the world of politics when asked if he's supporting former Republican House Speaker Paul Renner in his run for Florida at a press conference on Wednesday. Renner announced his decision to run in an exclusive interview with The Floridian today.

"Governor of what? Oh, look, I'm not supporting Paul Renner," DeSantis said in response to a reporter's question. "I think it was an ill-advised decision to enter the race."

The non-committal comes after an unrelated announcement from the governor on promoting good health and wellness.

Renner was Florida's House Speaker from 2022 to 2024. DeSantis had previously endorsed him for reelection in the legislature before his leadership role.

The governor's rejection is likely a disappointment for Renner as he seeks support with Congressman Byron Donalds in the race.

President Donald Trump has already endorsed Rep. Donalds, and the congressman has essentially locked up the entire Florida Republican coalition as we begin September, more than a year before the general election.

Where is Renner going to go, and where is the money going to come from?

Donalds has reportedly raised more than $20 million since joining the race. Trump's endorsement is also the price of gold.

But Renner, speaking to The Floridian, said he believes "the person who raises the most money is not the winner necessarily," adding that he "will raise enough to compete aggressively."

The governor's pass could also be connected to a decision from Lt. Gov. Jay Collins, a close friend of his. DeSantis tapped Collins as lieutenant governor in August, making it logical to believe he will run to succeed the term-limited governor for the job.

Collins has yet to decide on his plans. He did, however, dismiss speculation at a run for Congress, according to two sources close to him.

The election is set for Nov. 3, 2026.
