Miami mayoral candidate Emilio T. Gonzalez is looking to reduce the cost of raising children, support seniors on fixed incomes, and ensure city residents can live in the Magic City for years to come as part of his "Miami Families First" initiative, he announced today. The agenda is one of three pillars of Gonzalez's campaign as he looks to succeed term-limited Francis Suarez this November.
"Miami must not become a city where working families and seniors are displaced by rising costs and poor policies," Gonzalez said. "Miami Families First prioritizes families and seniors, ensuring they can afford to live and proper here."
According to Gonzalez, the Miami Families First plan encompasses two parts.
- Expanded Childcare Access: Gonzalez detailed that the plan would offer discounted childcare at participating facilities throughout the city. This would allow working parents to have access to affordable and quality care, he noted.
- Support for Seniors: Gonzalez also wants to help seniors by reducing the cost of living in the city, which includes property tax reforms. The plan is part of Gonzalez's "Affordability Agenda," or second pillar.
"This plan lowers the cost of raising families, protects seniors, and secures Miami's future through strong communities," Gonzalez added. "I believe Miami City Hall should put the needs of people above politics."
Gonzalez's first pillar included cleaning up City Hall and trust in local government.
"These three pillars provide a clear path for Miami - restoring accountability, reducing costs, and prioritizing families," Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez's agenda follows a long legal battle between him and the City of Miami to restore the mayoral election to November, a fight he has won for now. The fight even brought Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier and Gov. Ron DeSantis into the mix, who both demanded that the city keep its mayoral race for this fall.
