Florida Congressman Randy Fine (R) made a statement claiming that American universities are pandering to foreign students.
“Elite universities should be more focused on giving American students a good education than spending money and time on foreigners. Americans deserve better,” he stated.
In Rep. Fine’s statement, he included a short clip of a NewsMax interview in which he discussed Columbia University’s $220 million agreement with the Trump administration to restore federal funding and research grants.
“It's going to be a very, very big deal. $220 million is a lot of money, even in a place like Columbia. And I'm hopeful, as a guy who went to an Ivy League school and a Jewish student myself, many years ago, that this will have a big impact on my kids as they go to college and every other Jewish student, but frankly, every other American student,” he said.
This deal between the Trump administration and Columbia University came after funding was halted to the institution in the name of combating antisemitism on campus.
Under the agreement, the university will pay a $200 million settlement over three years, and it will also pay $21 million to resolve alleged civil rights violations against Jewish employees that occurred following the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, the White House said.
The school had more than $400 million in grants canceled earlier this year as the Trump administration pulled the funding because of what it described as the university’s failure to squelch antisemitism on campus during the Israel-Hamas war.
The institution has since agreed to a series of Republican demands, including overhauling its student disciplinary process, applying a federally endorsed definition of antisemitism to teaching and discipline, and establishing a disciplinary committee that is investigating students critical of Israel.
Fine hopes that these new reforms at Columbia University pave the way for a greater focus on American and Jewish students, as well as increased scrutiny on foreign students.
“They're also going to be taking a look at foreign students as part of this agreement, because our elite universities are spending too much time and too much of our money educating foreigners. They're looking at that as well,” he said.
