MIAMI— Joe Sanchez, a longtime public servant and recent Republican candidate for Miami-Dade County Sheriff, is reportedly considering a run for the County Commission District 5 seat if it becomes available.

Sanchez, who currently serves as the Public Information Officer for the Florida Highway Patrol in South Florida, is no stranger to local politics. A veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve and a former Miami City Commissioner, Sanchez has built a reputation for public safety leadership and community engagement over nearly four decades of service.

In 2024, Sanchez ran in the first-ever countywide Republican primary for Miami-Dade County Sheriff. Notably, he carried District 5 — which includes much of the City of Miami, as well as neighboring Districts 3 and 6. That strong performance among voters in the urban core has fueled speculation that he may be a leading contender should the District 5 Commission seat become vacant or open soon.

Speaking on the possibility of a run, Sanchez stated that "If the opportunity were to present itself, I would be honored to run for the district 5 seat — the place I’ve called home for the past 40 years.” Sanchez also added that “I care deeply about this community and have always believed in service above self. Our residents deserve a commissioner who will prioritize public safety, transparency, and results."

District 5 is a diverse and politically influential area, encompassing neighborhoods in the heart of the City of Miami. It has historically played a pivotal role in shaping countywide policy on issues such as housing, public transportation, infrastructure, and economic development.

While Sanchez has not made a formal announcement, political observers note that his name recognition, public safety credentials, and deep roots in the district could make him a formidable candidate. His law enforcement background and proven ability to connect with both Republican and independent voters position him uniquely within a politically complex district.

The District 5 seat in the County Commission could become available later this year, if County Commissioner Eileen Higgins, a democrat, qualifies to run for city of Miami Mayor. That vacancy would trigger either an appointment or special election, however, due to the length of time left in her term, many local observers believe that the appropriate thing to do would be to allow the residents to pick her replacement.

For now, Sanchez says his focus remains on serving the public and staying engaged with the community he has called home for four decades.
