Doral Mayor Christi Fraga recently deferred a resolution by City Councilwoman Digna Cabral that would have had the city voluntarily join the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) task force initiative, leaving her puzzled by the motive.
Councilwoman Cabral questioned the move in a statement on Thursday.
"This resolution aimed to establish collaboration with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) - a national task force focused on identifying inefficiencies and improving public spending across government institutions," Cabral said. "Its purpose was simple: to allow an independent, professional review of the City's financial practices and provide recommendations on how to better manage public resources."
Adding to the decision, Cabral also said the city tried to keep her from meeting a DOGE director during her visit to Tallahassee. According to her, the meeting went on as scheduled successfully.
Again, Cabral wondered why there was such pushback.
"Why is the City of Doral resiting participation in an initiative built around transparency, accountability, and fiscal responsibility?" This resolution had no political agenda - it was focused solely on promoting good governance for the benefit of all residents," Cabral said.
This isn't the first (or likely the last) controversy involving Mayor Fraga. The Doral Community Coalition filed a complaint against her last year for a fake endorsement from the Republican Party of Miami-Dade.
That followed another ordeal in which a filmmaker who once praised Venezuelan Dictator Hugo Chavez was reportedly on the city's payroll, and her support for a Israel-Hamas ceasefire resolution. Doral has a large population of Venezuelan immigrants.
Despite another questionable decision by Fraga, Cabral vowed to stay the course.
"I will continue to work and fight for what is right for Doral and to ensure our local government remains transparent, responsible, and responsive to its people," Cabral said.
