Florida Power and Light, the largest electric utility in the United States, recently celebrated its 100th anniversary with a nod to its growth in astronautics in the 1960s, just as the Sunshine State began to see population growth to what it has become today.
"CELEBRATING 100 YEARS: Florida boomed in the 1960s, with thousands moving to the state each week," Florida Power and Light said. "To meet the demand, we expanded infrastructure and embraced new technology to deliver reliable, efficient energy."
Florida Power and Light (FPL) serves more than 5.8 million accounts, or more than 12 million people in the state. The utility's mission is to provide clean, affordable, reliable electricity.
FPL was founded on Dec. 28, 1925.
While maybe best known for its beaches, Florida is at the center of space exploration and development in the United States. The Kennedy Space Center, founded in 1962 in Cape Canaveral, is one of 10 NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) facilities in America.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis also recently announced SpaceX operations were headed to the Sunshine State.
Thus, Cape Canaveral and its region have been known as the "Space Coast." Since its foundation, FPL has been there every step of the way.
"By 1965, the Cape Canaveral plant was powering the space program and the growing communities around it. From rockets to homes, we've been here to keep Florida energized," FPL.
According to FPL, the company provides one of the cleanest power generation fleets in the United States. It has also won the National Reliability Award, which recognizes exceptional reliability and resiliency by electric utilities, seven times in eight years, dating back to 2022.
FPL was also named a trusted electric utility nine years in a row by Escalent, a top human behavior and analytics firm.
