MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - Senate President Ben Albritton, R-Bartow, recently announced that Sen. Shevrin "Shev" Jones, D-Miami Gardens, will serve as Vice Chair of the Senate Rules Committee for the 2025 Florida legislative session.

"I thank Senate President @Sen_Albritton for trusting me to hold the Vice Chair position on the Rules Committee," Jones said. "The appointment of minority caucus members to serve as Vice Chairs of the three biggest committees in the Senate demonstrates President Albritton’s collegial, bipartisan approach to this upcoming session."

Jones represents Senate District 34, which covers part of Miami-Dade County. In 2022, Jones won SD 34 after the general election was canceled.

In the 2022 SD 34 Democratic primary, Jones easily defeated Erhabor Ighodaro and Pitchie Escarment with 68% of the vote. Previously, Jones served in Senate District 35 and as a representative for House District 101.

Moreover, Jones has already declared for reelection in SD 34 for 2026.

"The people of Florida deserve results, not partisan games. I look forward to digging in this session and continuing to put families first," Jones added.

The 41-year-old Jones was born in Miami Gardens. Before politics, he received a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry/molecular biology from Florida A&M University in 2006 and a master's degree in educational leadership from Florida Atlantic University in 2017.

He also previously taught AP Chemistry in Broward County Public Schools and was the executive director of South Florida Reading Corps.

Recently, Jones criticized President-elect Donald Trump for inviting an insult comic that disparaged Puerto Ricans to his Madison Square Garden rally in New York City before the presidential election.

Along with Jones, Albritton recently announced that Sen. Ileana Garcia, R-Miami, will chair the Criminal & Civil Justice Appropriations Committee for the Legislative Session. He also named former Senate President Kathleen Passidomo, R-Naples, as the Rules Chair.

Other selections by Albritton included Sen. Joe Gruters, R-Sarasota, for the Fiscal Policy Committee, and Sen. Ed Hooper, R-Palm Harbor, as the Appropriations Chair.

In addition, Sen. Jim Boyd, R-Bradenton, was named to replace Albritton as the Florida Senate GOP Leader.

The 2025 Florida Legislative Session begins on March 4 and ends on May 2 in Tallahassee.
