Vice President Kamala Harris’ new pledge to spend hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to continue the Trump-era border security wall if elected President, is nothing more than one of the biggest political flip-flops in recent American history.
Rolling back the proverbial political clock to the 2016 Democratic presidential primary election, then-Senator Harris excoriated former President Donald Trump’s building of “The Wall” by using a string of derogatory terms to describe the action.
Harris, who supports the now-defeating bipartisan Senate immigration measure put forth by Sens. John Lankford (R-Ok) and Chris Murphy (D-CT), called the construction of the wall “un-American” and “a stupid use of money,” not to mention referring to it as President Trump’s "medieval vanity project."
The Senate bill Harris said she would implement during her presidential nomination acceptance speech requires for the border wall to be built.
"It requires the Trump border wall," Sen.Lankford told Axios. "It is in the bill itself that it sets the standards that were set during the Trump administration: Here's where it will be built. Here's how it has to be built, the height, the type, everything during the Trump construction."
The Biden administration has been quietly selling off remnants of the border wall.
The House version of the Lankford-Murphy bill was dead on arrival in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, but Democratic lawmakers like Rep. Jared Moskowitz supported the contents of the Senate bill, including the construction of the wall.
“I have always supported the Republican-drafted bipartisan Senate border bill,” said Rep. Moskowitz in a statement to The Floridian in response to the question posed of whether he agreed it was a good idea for Harris to want to build the border wall.
Several of Rep. Moskowitz’s Republican colleagues were also asked about Harris’ border wall flip-flop.
As you can imagine, the Republican lawmakers used the opportunity to Tee off on “Border Czar” Harris, outlining the “failed border policies” she has promoted since taking office in 2021.
“Americans are used to hearing many empty promises from candidates seeking their votes. It is important to remember that actions speak louder than words. While she may now be vocalizing support for a border wall in response to political backlash, the reality is that Border Czar Harris has spent the entirety of her term supporting policies that have created this crisis and has repeatedly thwarted efforts to require her Administration to enforce the rule of law and secure the border. Under her watch, more than 10 million illegal aliens have entered and been released into our country, including many on the terror watch list. It is clear that VP Harris will say anything to try to get elected,” stated Rep. Gus Bilirakis.
Rep. Bilirakis continued, accusing Harris’ immigration inactions of costing American lives.
“However, despite her recent rhetoric, her actions and failed border policies have made us less safe, cost American lives, and jeopardized our national security,” said Rep. Bilirakis.
Rep. Greg Steube echoed Rep. Bilirakis’ “Border Czar” referencing of Harris and said that the only reason why she was supporting a border wall was because recent public opinion polling showed Trump trouncing her on the issue of illegal immigration and border security.
“She’s been the border czar for 3 years, why didn’t she finish building it already? If she really supports the border wall, why did she call it a “stupid use of money” and “un-American”? Her record is clear, and no amount of election-year lying tactics from the Democrats will change that. On day 1, the Biden-Harris administration stopped border wall construction. The border czar allowed over 13 million illegals into our country including ISIS members, known terrorists, and criminals,” said Rep. Steube in a statement to The Floridian. “ She has no intention to close the border. This is nothing but a ploy for votes 2 months from an election because the Democrats know the border is a major political liability.”
Rep. Steube continued his dressing down of Harris’ immigration policies while praising Trump for delivering on “his promise to make America safe and secure.”
“The American people demand safety and security! If Donald Trump’s border wall wasn’t so popular with the American people, Kamala wouldn’t be lying about supporting it right now. Americans know Donald Trump is the only one who delivered on his promise to make America safe and secure, and he’ll do it again,” added Steube.
Texas Rep. Pete Sessions also chimed in, encouraging Harris to fully embrace every aspect of the hawkish House version of the Senate immigration bill.
“Kamala Harris should support building a border wall. I would encourage her to endorse all of the border provisions in H.R. 2,” said Rep.Sessions in response to our request for comment on the issue.
The latest polls show Harris lagging behind Trump on the economic and border security issues.
