Just before and after Hurricane Idalia hit Florida’s Big Bend region as a Category 3 storm this past week, Gov. Ron DeSantis and the state’s emergency services assets kicked into high gear.

Thankfully the storm came over a less-densely populated region of the state, unlike last year’s Hurricane Ian, which made landfall in Southwest Florida.

So far, there have not been any fatalities reported, and while damage is extensive, it doesn’t appear to be at the level of Hurricane Ian.

DeSantis suspended his presidential campaign but has kept up his public appearances on the ground in the storm-battered area.

While DeSantis is off the campaign trail, all eyes are on his every move, and the media he is garnering is staggering and beneficial.

This is what you call free earned media.

Expect DeSantis to refrain from continuing his campaign for at least 10-14 more days.

If he begins to campaign too soon after the storm, and there are still significant clean-up and recovery efforts underway, his presidential opponents and “legacy media” types will surely pounce.

Ron DeSantis-Less than 24 hours after landfall, our utility linemen have already restored power to 420,000 homes that lost power.

We are working with @DukeEnergy & @insideFPL to surge resources into the hardest hit areas to get the 140,000 homes that remain without power back up and running.

Maxwell Alejandro Frost-An honor to join @afa_cwa today at the Orlando International Airport! Today is their nationwide day of action calling on United to negotiate the contract Flight Attendants deserve.
