Authorities in Texas are now opening an investigation into Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ (R) decision to send two planes filled with undocumented immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard. The decision was met with widespread condemnation from Democrats while Republicans championed the effort that has been similarly made by other Governors.
The news comes a week after Governor DeSantis took credit for directing two planes with undocumented immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard, which is the home of many celebrities including the Obamas.
In response to the move, California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) called for the Department of Justice to launch an investigation into the Florida Governor. While the Department of Justice has not responded to the call, authorities in Texas have now responded by opening a criminal investigation into Governor DeSantis’ order.
During a news release this week, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar announced that his office is investigating whether the immigrants transported were the victims of a crime.
"The Bexar County Sheriff's Office has opened an investigation into the migrants that were lured from the Migrant Resource Center, located in Bexar County, TX, and flown to Florida, where they were ultimately left to fend for themselves in Martha's Vineyard, MA," said Salazar.
Salazar added that his office is "also preparing to work with any federal agencies that have concurrent jurisdiction, should the need arise."
An estimated 50 Venezuelan migrants were sent to Martha's Vineyard, and Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) has issued a similar response with migrants.
Just last week the Texas Governor authorized the arrival of buses with undocumented immigrants at the home of Vice President Kamala Harris' (D) home in Washington D.C.
In a statement, Governor Abbott said that "the Biden-Harris Administration continues ignoring and denying the historic crisis at our southern border, which has endangered and overwhelmed Texas communities for almost two years," adding that "our supposed Border Czar, Vice President Kamala Harris, has yet to even visit the border to see firsthand the impact of the open border policies she has helped implement, even going so far as to claim the border is ‘secure.’"
"Texas will continue sending migrants to sanctuary cities like Washington, D.C. until President Biden and Border Czar Harris step up and do their jobs to secure the border," Abbott concluded.
