Florida Republicans continue to criticize the FBI over its raid at Mar-a-Lago at the beginning of the week. With some praising the raid, others questioning it and yet others vehemently criticizing it, Republicans are calling it “frightening” and demanding “answers.”
Ronna McDaniel (R), the Chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, echoed President Donald Trump’s (R) statement after the raid was announced.
In his statement, Trump likened the raid to Watergate. Similarly, McDaniel said, in a statement, that the president was “right when he compared this to Watergate,” adding that “this is the government using an agency to spy on a potential opponent’s campaign.” Calling it “frightening,” McDaniel added that “it is not what our democracy stands for.”
Although he has not made a formal announcement, Trump has significantly hinted that he would be challenging President Joe Biden (D) in 2024.
No word has been released regarding the motive behind the raid, but the New York Times did report that it was in reference to a box of classified documents.
Florida Senator Rick Scott (R) also released a statement, criticizing both FBI Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland.
Calling on both officials to release statements regarding the raid, Scott commented that if they don’t “they will have lost what little public trust they may have had and no longer deserve to remain in office.”
“All related records must be made available to Congress NOW and every Republican must demand accountability,” adding that “since President Biden claims he didn’t know, he needs to come out today and demand that all facts be presented to the American people.”
Referencing the upcoming midterm election, Scott also warned that “when Republicans retake the majority in the Senate, there will be a thorough and aggressive investigation.”
“The nation is watching and we demand answers,” the Florida Republican concluded.
