Florida House Democrats 'Dog' Republicans on Animal Issues

If animals like Fido the Dog and Garfield the Cat could vote for who will represent them in the U.S. Congress, they would most likely vote for House Democrats over their Republican counterparts.

According to the Humane Society Legislative Fund, Republican lawmakers except for Reps. Vern Buchanan, Michael Waltz, and Carlos Gimenez are in the dog house when it comes to supporting Democratic legislation supporting animals.

The mission of the Humane Society’s political action fund is to, um, “get political for animals.”

The fund wants to ensure that all barks, meows, squeals, and growls are heard in Congress and in state governing bodies like Florida’s Republican-led legislature.

Rep. Vern Buchanan is the sole congressional Republican that garnered a 100% rating from the fur-friendly Humane Society.

House Democrats who have thrown Fido a bone and received the same 100% rating were Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Stephanie Murphy, Charlie Crist, Val Demings, Ted Deutch, Lois Frankel, Frederica Wilson, and Darren Soto.

Republicans who received a 0% rating from the group are Sens. Marco Rubio and Rick Scott, Rep. and Kat Cammack. Rep. Byron Donald got an 8% rating.

Again, the pieces of legislation that lawmakers were scored on are primarily Democratic-sponsored bills and could have measures included in them that Republicans do not support.

Sen. Rubio, who has the 0% rating, is the proud father of two Labradoodles named, Arthur and Winston (pictured), and Rep. Cammack has a whole flock of chickens and a bunch of cows, so it could be safe to say that many Republicans loved animals too.
