Democrats are not too excited to welcome Governor DeSantis' (R-FL) newest cabinet member with a new surgeon general in Florida. Now, State Rep. Carlos G. Smith (D-FL) says he has "concerns" with the new Surgeon General who was educated outside of Florida.
During a press conference, this week in Tallahassee during the recently concluded "special session," Rep. Smith defended the Democratic Caucus's failed amendment to a House anti-vaccine mandate bill that would have required Florida's surgeon general to be licensed in Florida for at least 1 year before being eligible to serve as the top doctor in the state.
"Listen, we have very strong institutions and universities of higher education in the state. In fact, we have the best higher education system in the nation right here in Florida. That yield a number of world-class medical professionals and experts who come from our universities and teach from our universities," said Rep. Smith.
Smith insists that DeSantis' appointment, Dr. Joe Ladapo, is "transplanted," and we do not need to, "transplant from other states or other countries to well represent the medical field, and certainly the medical profession in the state of Florida."
Rep. Carlos G. Smith referred to Ladapo's credentials as, "fast-tracked," and reiterated that he has, "concerns," about the legitimacy of this Surgeon General.
