A recent 2018 report by the Department of Veterans Affairs shows that the suicide rate for veterans has risen to 17.5 per day, but that daily death rate is actually hovering higher at 22 veteran deaths a day.
"The suicide data presented in this new report is an integral part of VA's Public Health Model for Suicide Prevention, which combines evidence-based clinical interventions and proactive community-based prevention strategies to address suicide in our nation," VA Secretary Robert Wilkie said in a press release. "The data shows the rate of suicide among Veterans who recently used VA health services has decreased, an encouraging sign as the department continues its work and shares what we learn with those who care for and about Veterans." Former U.S. Army JAG officer and Rep. Greg Steube (R) took part in an event this past weekend sponsored by a local American Legion chapter to bring awareness to the “devastating” veteran suicide statistics.
“An average of 22 veterans commit suicide each day,” stated Rep. Steube. “I was honored to join the American Legion today for a ruck walk to raise awareness for this devastating statistic. After America’s heroes bravely served our nation we owe it to them to be there when they need it most.”
Steube’s colleague in the House, wounded combat veteran Rep. Brian Mast (R) has also been working to the rate of death by filing legislation to prevent veteran suicides
“There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t talk to a veteran who is struggling with their self-worth since leaving the military. Throughout our lives, the most important commitments we make are spoken – whether it’s an oath upon joining the military, vows at a wedding or saying the pledge of allegiance,” Rep. Mast said. “Integrity is more than just a word to service members, so I know if we say we’ll look out for each other and ourselves, then we’ll do it. These bills are about doing anything and everything we can to prevent even one more veteran from harming themselves.”
