sanctuary city
WASHINGTON—Representative Mike Haridopolos (R-FL) spoke with The Floridian about Democratic resistance to President Donald Trump's border policy, suggesting that their staunch opposition is part of why the Party suffers from record-low approval ratings. "How you cannot go after the minimum, criminal illegal aliens, is beyond me," said Rep. Haridopolos, adding, "It is the reason why their […]
Florida’s ‘Sanctuary Cities’ immigration law that Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed into law back in June, was dealt a blow by a federal judge this week. U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom struck down the portion of the law that allows local law enforcement to cross state lines to aid federal law enforcement agencies like ICE.
The most notable of the so-called "controversial bills that failed was the fetal 'heartbeat' bill, even as many other Republican-led state legislatures passed similar legislation.
For the second time this legislative session, the House on Wednesday sent a strict “sanctuary city” bill to the Senate, where Senate President Bill Galvano has already said he plans to make changes and bounce the issue back to the House.
The House early Wednesday substituted its proposed sanctuary-city ban for a Senate version of the bill. Before the House decision, Sen. Travis Hutson, R-St. Augustine, said such a move could potentially send the “whole thing up in flames.”
The Senate on Thursday prepared a controversial sanctuary-city measure for passage after making changes that included giving the governor authority to remove any official who fails to comply with federal immigration law.
When asked if he believed Trump had the right to break the law, Scott simply said that he felt the president is “very frustrated” because the wasn’t being secured because “Democrats are stopping” the border patrol from doing their job of securing the U.S. southern border.
DeSantis responded by mentioning of an existing “bill in the legislature” that he says, “we are going to pass,” affirming the will “absolutely” sign the bill into Florida law.
Republicans are now poised (they still are) on defeating Democrats on immigration reform.
