With the 2026 midterm elections less than three weeks away, Democratic challengers for U.S. House seats in Florida are raising concerns about their stance on the rising intraparty socialist movement and the candidacy of one of its leading figures for Florida’s U.S. Senate seat.
Congressional incumbents and candidates, including Reps. Jared Moskowitz (D), Darren Soto (D), and congressional nominee Pia Dandiya, are facing scrutiny over Senatorial nominee Rep. Angie Nixon’s (D) recent calls to imprison Sen. Ashley Moody (R) during a CNN interview.
Nixon Wants Her Political Opponent Jailed
“They are spreading like a lot of disinformation and lies in commercials about me, saying things like I ‘want to abolish prisons’ and I ‘want to defund the police...Why would I want to do that when I want [Ashley Moody] locked up and punished for what she has done," said Nixon.
Nixon doubled down on her admission when CNN asked if she wants to see her Republican opponent locked up, telling the outlet, “Yes, because of what she did. Yes, I absolutely would want that to happen,” referring to the recent $10 million Hope Florida scandal.
Democratic Challengers Are "Refusing To Condemn" Nixon
Nixon’s comments have drawn scrutiny against Reps. Moskowitz & Soto, and Dandiya for failing to denounce the self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist’s positions.
“[They are] refusing to condemn her insane position,” said Maureen O’Toole, a spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee.
“Angie Nixon wants to jail her opponent, and [they] can’t bring [themselves] to say that’s wrong.”
Incumbents Public Denouncement of Socialism
Despite not formally denouncing Nixon in her run for the Senate, Reps. Soto and Moskowitz have done so on socialism itself.
Recently, the U.S. House of Representatives adopted a resolution to denounce socialism “in all its forms,” including the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
Reps. Soto and Kathy Castor (D) crossed party lines and voted for the measure.
Congressman Moskowitz approved the denouncement but rejected the measure because it included the SAVE America Act, the controversial election-integrity bill.
