President Donald Trump announced the renaming of another body of water surrounding the U.S., this time going after one of the Great Lakes of North America amid an escalating trade war with Canada.
“The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to be doing much business with Ontario any longer,” President Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Gulf Of America
The president’s effort marks the second time he’s attempted to rename a body of water named after a North American neighbor.
In his first day back in office, President Trump signed the “Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness” executive order. The directive sought to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America and the highest mountain peak in North America from Denali back to Mount McKinley.
Carney Accuses U.S. Of of Undermining French Canadian Culture
President Trump’s announcement comes amid a highly contentious trade war with the U.S.’s northern partner.
In a recent press conference, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney accused the U.S. of demanding that Canada roll back French-language requirements as one of the terms during agreement talks.
“We were ready and close to having a comprehensive agreement that would be fair to both countries. But they made changes, including threats on the French language and Quebec culture and Canadian culture,” Carney alleged, blaming the terms for the talks’ demise.
Trump Calls Carney's Accusations False
President Trump fired back, accusing Carney of making up the allegations to gain political support.
“I would never interfere with Canadians speaking French! In fact, I have never even thought of doing such a stupid thing,” President Trump affirmed on social media. “This lie was made up by a weak and ineffective Prime Minister in an attempt to gain political support, which he has totally lost, from the people of Quebec. I love French Canadians!”
