Former Palm Beach County State Attorney and former state Sen. Dave Aronberg, along with ex-state Rep. Sean Shaw, have endorsed Democrat Jose Javier Rodríguez for Florida Attorney General.
“I’ve spent my career holding powerful people accountable and investigating abuses of power when the rule of law is ignored. At a time when trust in government is at record lows, it’s clear Florida needs José Javier Rodríguez as Attorney General," Aronberg said recently. "He has the integrity, independence, and backbone this office requires. He understands that the Attorney General’s job is not about politics, but about enforcing the law, and I’m proud to endorse him."
"When I ran for Attorney General, I said Florida needed a different approach - one that stands up to special interests, defends civil rights, protects our kids, and fights for everyday Floridians," Shaw added in a statement. "Jose Javier Rodriguez embodies that commitment, and I'm proud to endorse him for Attorney General."
No stranger to Florida politics, Rodriguez served two terms in the Florida House of Representatives from 2012 to 2016. He was also elected to the Florida Senate from 2016 to 2020.
In 2020, Rodríguez lost to Sen. Ileana Garcia (R-Miami) in District 37 by just over 30 votes. The race drew particular attention after a candidate with the same surname as Rodriguez, Alex Rodriguez, received about 6300 votes.
More recently, the 47-year-old was in the Biden Administration as Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training. His background includes a degree from Brown University and a juris doctor from Harvard Law School.
Rodriguez thanked Aronberg for his support.
“Dave Aronberg has been a consistent voice for accountability and the rule of law,” Rodriguez said. “He has spent his career holding powerful people accountable and standing up for the integrity of our justice system. I’m honored to have his support.”
He also thanked Shaw for his endorsement in a Facebook post.
"I'm grateful for Sean Shaw's support and for his confidence in my commitment to accountability and the rule of law," Rodriguez wrote.
Along with Aronberg and Shaw, Rodriguez has earned support from former Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber, who also served in the Florida Legislature from 2006 to 2010, and former Florida U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson (D) in recent months.
Rodriguez is facing former state prosecutor Jim Lewis in the Democratic primary. Whoever advances is likely to compete against Attorney General James Uthmeier, who was appointed to the post by Gov. Ron DeSantis in February 2025.
The Republican Party of Florida, along with President Donald Trump, has endorsed Uthmeier in the race.
