The Miami-Dade Democratic Hispanic Caucus recently launched a county-wide billboard campaign exposing four Cuban-American Republican politicians for their "cowardice and neglect" to immigrant communities, particularly as the Trump administration seeks to end temporary protected status (TPS) to Venezuelans living in the United States.
The four Republicans attacked were Secretary of State Marco Rubio and U.S. Reps. Maria Elvira Salazar, Carlos Gimenez and Mario Diaz-Balart. The caucus said the "Gang of Four" Republicans have "betrayed immigrants, the Hispanic community, and the American Dream."
“Marco Rubio, María Elvira Salazar, Carlos Giménez and Mario Díaz-Balart have turned their backs on us,” Miami-Dade Democratic Hispanic Caucus President Abel S. Delgado said in a release. “Rather than stand up for our families, they’ve stood silently while immigrant communities are targeted, detained, and deported. They’ve forgotten where they come from — but we haven’t.”
According to the release, the first billboard was erected on the Palmetto Expressway between Doral and Hialeah. The sign shows Rubio, Salazar, Gimenez and Diaz-Balart with the word "TRAITORS" to immigrants, Miami-Dade, and the American dream.
The billboard also asked to ensure TPS for Venezuelans. Since February, the Trump administration has attempted to end two federal TPS programs that together allowed more than 700,000 Venezuelans to stay and work legally in the United States.
The termination would also affect Cubans and other Latino communities.
A California federal judge recently blocked one of the orders, which for now keeps approximately 350,000 Venezuelan nationals from losing their temporary protected status. The temporary order will run through April 2, 2026, while legal proceedings continue
Miami-Dade has one of the largest Hispanic populations in the United States. One of its communities, Doral, is known as "Little Venezuela" or "Doralzuela" due to its Venezuelan population.
"Trump’s immigration agenda is pushing to deport Venezuelan TPS holders back to [Nicolas] Maduro's brutal regime, and to send legally paroled Cuban immigrants back to Cuba's long-standing tyranny by April 24th. Some are being held indefinitely without due process in El Salvador," the release said.
The caucus also called out Rep. Salazar for "shamelessly" crediting the Trump administration for trying to fight back against the recent court-ordered extension.
“We don’t need spin — we need courage,” Caucus Board Member Maria Corina Vegas said. “If Congresswoman Salazar truly cared about our community, she’d stand up to her party, not lie to protect it.”
“This ‘Gang of Four’ is lying and betraying a community that trusted them—people who fled tyranny seeking freedom,” added Vegas. “As a Venezuelan American who watched my country fall into dictatorship, I see the warning signs. Their complicity is shameful. We will make sure everyone knows exactly the traitors they are.”
The caucus said the billboard was the first step to engage the Miami-Dade public and hold the four Republican officials accountable for "anti-immigrant cruelty and political betrayal.
“We will not be quiet. We will not let them hide behind pretend patriotic speeches while our families are ripped apart,” added Delgado. “These billboards are just the beginning.”
