A former staffer for Florida State Sen. Brian Nathan (D-14) has alleged that both Sen. Brian and Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried are ignoring sexual assault allegations against gubernatorial nominee David Jolly (D )'s “confidante” because the party needs his money and influence.
Shawna Vercher, a former campaign manager for state Sen. Nathan, accused both Democratic leaders of overlooking detailed allegations of sexual assault involving a minor against “longtime political consultant and Jolly confidante” Barry Edwards.
Who is Barry Edwards?
According to Tampa radio station WMNF, Edwards is a St. Petersburg-based political consultant who has worked for both political parties for more than 40 years.
Vercher Calls Out Florida Democrats For Ignoring Edwards' History
Vercher said that despite years of credible accusations ranging from the mid-1990s to the present, Democratic circles did not ostracize Edwards for his alleged misconduct.
State Sen. Nathan Allegedly Backtracked His Promise to Get Justice
Vercher also criticized State Sen. Nathan for his alleged complicity, given Edwards’ history.
According to the political media strategist, Sen. Nathan met with victims, reviewed documentation, and originally promised to act. However, Sen. Nathan reportedly backed away from his pledge after the Florida Democratic Party offered post-election support in exchange for his silence.
“With one press statement, he could raise awareness that could be national, and with one flex of his political power, he could make his party do something and protect people, and he’s just refusing,” Vercher said.
Sen. Nathan Called Resurfaced Allegations A 'Distraction'
In Sept. 2026, Sen. Nathan reportedly acknowledged the resurfaced allegations; however, he deemed the timing a political tactic to diminish Democratic candidates.
“I am deeply disappointed that there are those that would rather try to distract and divide voters while using victims as a political football instead of making their lives better,” Sen. Nathan wrote, after asserting unwavering support for sexual assault victims.
Edwards' Alleged History
According to several records and documents, Edwards' history allegedly includes eight verified accusations, 14 reports of inappropriate behavior, an incident with a 15-year-old Boy Scout, and a Florida State University victim.
