WASHINGTON, D.C. – In an exclusive interview with The Floridian, Republican congressional nominee for Florida’s 22nd District Casey Askar discussed the dangers of communism in the Western Hemisphere.
The Naples businessman commented that the biggest threat the U.S. has in its hemisphere is that of communism and the influence of China.
Askar: “It was the former Soviet Union; it’s been replaced by China.”
“The cancer is Cuba, and it spreads through there.”
“We see how it spread to Venezuela and will continue to spread.”
“So, you see the president’s actions in Venezuela that suppressed that; now American business is in there – You see Chevron in there making big investments, doubling the output of petroleum that will flow here to the United States, so that’s all positive.”
“But we’ve got to attack Cuba.”
The U.S.'s Campaign Against Communist-led Nations
The Trump administration’s pressure campaign against communist-led nations in our backyard has been prominent throughout his second administration.
Following the capture of former Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro, the U.S. has gained major influence in Venezuela as it transitions into a capitalist democracy.
The changes in Venezuela have helped the U.S. contain Cuba and force regime changes on the Caribbean island as it faces economic warfare from the U.S.
"Florida is the Capital of Latin America" Askar says
With the 2026 midterm elections just weeks away, Askar understands that being a congressman, especially in southern Florida, includes a focus on foreign policy and foreign relations.
“Remember, this is South Florida. South Florida is the capital of South America,” Askar affirmed. “Over 90% of every transaction that happens in South America takes place in Florida.”
“Florida is the capital of Latin America, and so we’ve got to make sure that we’re suppressing communism, controlling the trade the way that we are, and root communism out,” he added.
“If we root communism out, it makes us safer,” Askar said.
