WASHINGTON,D.C— Florida Rep. Cory Mills (R) has addressed the recent and unconfirmed news reporting that he was been under investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ).
In an exclusive interview with The Floridian, Rep. Mills asserts that the alleged DOJ investigation against him were politically motivated “lies.”
“I think this is more about political opposition making up lies,” said Rep. Mills.
Rep. Mills added that he was not aware of any investigation, but that if there was an investigation, he would “cooperate” because he had “nothing to hide.”
“No one's actually even come forward to speak with us about it. I've never been approached by neither the DOJ or the FBI at any point in time, and again, if there was such an investigation, obviously I would cooperate as I have nothing to hide.”—Rep. Cory Mills
Mills, who is being probed by the House Ethics Committee for alleged violations of campaign finance laws and is accused of engaging in dating violence, is also asserting that the DOJ claim is nothing more than “propagandized lawfare.”
“When you wait until four weeks before a primary to try and say a source claims and we've never been approached by either of the Department of Justice or FBI, and it's a four weeks out from the primary, I think that we can see this is more about political propagandized lawfare than it is actual facts,” he concluded.
The Floridian was able to confirm that the rumors of a DOJ investigation into Mills were accurate, but could not verify if the there is a legitimate ongoing investigation by the Justice Department, which has not responded to our request for comment.
Speaker Michael Johnson recently asserted his full support of Mills, calling him a "very productive member" and a "great team member."
