Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation renaming roadways after President Donald Trump and late conservative activist Charlie Kirk into law this week.
The bill (HB 33) renames a portion of Southwest 107th Avenue (State Road 90) between 8th Street and 24th Street alongside Florida International University (FIU) in Miami-Dade County as “Charlie Kirk Memorial Avenue." Kirk was assassinated while speaking at a campus event at Utah Valley State University in September 2025.
Rep. Juan Porras (R-Miami) sponsored the bill in the House. Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez (R-Doral) sponsored a similar bill in the Senate.
"Florida International University is home to many students who know firsthand the dangers of communism through their families and community," Porras told The Floridian at the time of the bill's filing. "That culture of valuing freedom and rejecting oppressive ideologies is at the heart of what he [Kirk] promoted. Placing this designation near FIU ties Charlie Kirk's work in civic engagement to a campus that already embodies these principles and where his work in FL began about 10 years ago."
Kirk founded Turning Point USA, one of the largest youth conservative organizations in the country, in 2012. Rep. Porras indicated on 'X' that he and Kirk established the first Turing Point USA chapter in Florida back in 2015 near the road after filing the bill last year.
“Now it will honor his legacy,” Porras said at the time.
Other designations honoring kick include the "Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway" in Lake County, as well as roads in Collier, Marion, and Hernando counties. In addition, New College of Florida in Sarasota commissioned a statue in honor of Krik in September 2025.
The bill also renames part of Commercial Boulevard in Broward County "President Donald J. Trump Boulevard." Notably, Trump has been honored by Florida in several different ways, including with an airport and road in Palm Beach County.
HB 33 goes into effect on July 1.
