President Donald Trump arrived in Beijing for a summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, marking the first time the president has visited China since 2017.

Walking alongside the president were his son Eric Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and a mirage of high-profile business leaders, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Apple CEO Tim Cook.

The meeting, originally scheduled from Mar. 31 to Apr. 2 2026, was postponed to May 14-15, 2026, in response to the war in Iran.

According to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the two parties are expected to discuss issues related to the conflict in the Middle East and trade between the two.

Concerns From Senate Leaders

Amid the summit meeting, NBC News reported concerns from U.S. Senators who worry that President Trump could give the Chinese government concessions in U.S. policy regarding Taiwan.

Top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), reportedly stated that she is “very worried about what the president is going to say on Taiwan.”

"I think it’s absolutely critical that we make it clear that the United States’ policy with respect to Taiwan has not changed," Sen. Shaheen added. "And I’m very worried about what the president is going to say on Taiwan, because we know that that’s something that President Xi wants. We know that President Trump is going into this meeting in a weakened position, and so I hope he doesn’t give away the store.”

“We want an independent Taiwan, and obviously doing everything we can to help support making them a so-called porcupine, you know, that makes it unattractive for China to try and interfere with what’s happening in Taiwan or in any way take any sort of military action," Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) emphasized, adding that the policy "is something that I think most of us support."

President Trump and Xi Jinping’s last meeting was in Oct. 2025 in South Korea.
