President Donald Trump expressed his disappointment in both Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett over their court opinions in relation to the U.S. Supreme Court’s (SCOTUS) ruling on his sweeping global tariffs.
“They were appointed by me, and yet have hurt our Country so badly!” President Trump wrote in a Truth Social post over the weekend.
“I’m working so hard to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, and then people that I appointed have shown so little respect to our Country, and its people. What is the reason for this? They have to do the right thing, but it’s really OK for them to be loyal to the person that appointed them to “almost” the highest position in the land, that is, a Justice of the United States Supreme Court,” President Trump added.
SCOTUS Rules IEEPA Tariffs Illegal
In Feb. 2026, SCOTUS ruled President Trump’s broad tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) of 1977 as illegal.
"We claim no special competence in matters of economics or foreign affairs. We claim only, as we must, the limited role assigned to us by Article III of the Constitution," Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the 6-3 decision. "Fulfilling that role, we hold that IEEPA does not authorize the President to impose tariffs."
In an interview with ABC News’ Live Prime Anchor Linsey Davis prior to President Trump’s post, Justice Gorsuch affirmed his stance on remaining “independent” and “fearless” in fulfilling his role, no matter the criticism received by the president.
Concern Over Birthright Citizenship Decision
In his post, President Trump also touched on his concern for SCOTUS’ potential ruling on Birthright Citizenship amid his appointees’ “independent” nature.
“I choose people to help our Country, not to hurt it, and now, based on what I witnessed recently by being the first President in History to attend a Supreme Court session… they will be ruling against us on Birthright Citizenship, making us the only Country in the World that practices this unsustainable, unsafe, and incredibly costly DISASTER,” President Trump wrote.
“I don’t want loyalty, but I do want and expect it for our Country.”
