Former Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book announced her candidacy for Senate District 30 through a social media post this week. Book, who served as Leader from 2021 to 2024, and as a Senator from 2016 to 2024, is looking to replace Sen. Tina Scott Polsky (R-Boca Raton), who announced she would not seek another term earlier this week.
"I’m proud to announce my candidacy for the Florida Senate, District 30 — because families in this community deserve a fighter who knows how to get things done," Book wrote. "I’ve spent my life fighting for children, families, survivors, and communities too often overlooked or ignored — and I’m ready to bring that fight back to Tallahassee."
"I’m running to make Florida more affordable for working families and seniors, keep our children and communities safe, protect our fundamental freedoms, and deliver the kind of leadership rooted in compassion, accountability, and real results. That’s the work I’ve always believed in — and I’m ready to keep fighting for it," Book added.
SD 30 covers southern Palm Beach County, including part of Boca Raton, and northwest Broward County to include Coconut Creek, Coral Springs, and Deerfield Beach.
Sen. Polsky, who has been in office since 2020, congratulated Book on her announcement.
"Lauren Book has spent her life turning pain into purpose and fighting for people who often go unheard, Polsky wrote. "She is one of the most compassionate, relentless, and effective advocates I have ever had the pleasure of serving with - and Florida Senate District 30 would be extraordinarily well represented by her leadership once again."
Sen. Democratic Leader Lori Berman (D-Boynton Beach) and Sen. Mack Bernard (D-West Palm Beach) also released statements backing Book in the race.
Despite the support, Book might not be alone. Rep. Dan Daley (D-Coral Springs) indicated a possibility at a run for the seat through a social media post earlier this week.
"I've spent years for the possibility of running for this Senate seat because this community is my home," Daley wrote. "I've represented parts of it as an elected official since 2012, passing laws focused on keeping our communities safe and securing more than $40 million for local projects critical to our continued growth and wellbeing."
Rep. Daley, elected in 2019, added residents deserved "transparency and honesty" regarding the future of the district.
"I'm taking a serious look at the race and talking with supporters, community leaders, and residents throughout the district before making any decisions," Daley added.
Jerusa Zitta is running on the Republican ticket.
The primary is Aug. 18, with the general election on Nov. 3.
