Sen. Ashley Moody (R-Fla.) and Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) announced a co-sponsored measure to suspend U.S. senators' pay during a government shutdown.
Sen. Moody’s recent resolution is part of an overall effort to "bring back sanity in Washington, D.C.," cracking down on government shutdowns and the lack of repercussions placed on federal lawmakers.
“It’s astounding that Democrats can hold our government hostage – forcing thousands to go without pay - while still receiving their own paycheck,” Sen. Moody stated. “That ends today.”
“I’m proud to join Sen. Kennedy and have called for this common-sense measure since day one, because I am a firm believer that this place is in desperate need of reform,” she added.
The resolution has passed in the Senate and is in effect, a press release from the Senator's office confirmed.
“Withholding Senator pay during a shutdown is a strong first step in fixing a painfully stubborn system that is often used for political games,” Sen. Moody affirmed.
Senator Moody's Efforts Towards Congressional Accountability
Sen. Moody is no stranger to Congressional reform efforts.
In Oct. 2025, the Florida-based lawmaker cosponsored the Eliminate Shutdowns Act, a bill that activates an automatic two-week continuing resolution in the event of a lapse in government funding.
“As one of the country’s newest Senators, I’m working hard to bring sanity to D.C., and that’s why I’m cosponsoring the Eliminate Shutdowns Act so our government can remain open and working for the American people,” Sen. Moody stated, reaffirming her mission to restore normalcy on Capitol Hill.
In Apr. 2026, she also took to the Senate floor to introduce a resolution calling for the suspension of taxpayer-funded travel for Senators during shutdowns.
“This incentivizes the Senate to stay in town and find a solution to fund critical law enforcement agencies,” Sen. Moody asserted.
