U.S. Veterans and Democratic officials have reacted to President Donald Trump’s recent wave of threats to Iran, labeling the president’s warnings as a “war crime,” with several officials calling for the president’s removal from office.
Alex Tabet, a reporter for MS Now, interviewed several U.S. Veterans at American Legion South Miami Post-31 in Miami, FL.
Rick Shimek, Commander of Post-31 and U.S. Air Force Veteran, told MS Now, “I’m totally against it…It’s a war crime,” when asked by Tabet about the president’s arguments that his threats to blow up civilian infrastructure are not a war crime.
“How do you win a war by destroying the country?” Shimek questioned before expressing hope for diplomatic talks between the two nations.
Democratic Leaders Call for Trump's Impeachment
U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) (AOC) expressed calls for the president’s removal from office on a post via X.
“This is a threat of genocide and merits removal from office. The President’s mental faculties are collapsing and cannot be trusted,” Rep. AOC wrote. “To every individual in the President’s chain of command: You have a duty to refuse illegal orders. That includes carrying out this threat.”
“25th Amendment RIGHT NOW! Trump is too unhinged, dangerous, and deranged to have the nuclear codes!” Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.) posted in response to President Trump’s warnings, The Hill reported.
According to The Hill, the White House responded to Democratic leaders’ statements, calling them “pathetic.”
“Democrats have been talking about removing President Trump since before he was even sworn into office. The Democrats in Congress are deranged, weak, and ineffective, which is why their approval ratings are at historic lows,” White House spokesperson Davis Ingle said.
The 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, established in 1967 following President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, establishes clear standards for presidential succession and disability.
According to the Amendment, the Vice President (VP) and a majority of the Cabinet can vote to declare a president “unable to discharge the powers and the duties of his office,” passing down the position to the VP.
