Rep. James Raskin (D-Md.), the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, alongside 50 House Democrats, has introduced a bill to launch the removal of President Donald Trump through the 25th Amendment to the Constitution.
The legislation aims to establish a “Commission on Presidential Capacity to Discharge the Powers and Duties of Office,” authorized by the 25th Amendment, comprising a bipartisan group of 17 appointees.
This commission would “carry out a medical examination of the President to determine whether the President is mentally or physically unable to discharge the powers and duties of the office,” the text of the bill states.
“The Constitution explicitly vests Congress with the authority to create a body that will guarantee the successful continuity of government by responding to presidential incapacity to discharge the powers and duties of office,” Rep. Raskin remarked in a statement, affirming the constitutional authority backing the bill.
“We have a solemn duty to play our defined role under the 25th Amendment by setting up this body to act alongside the Vice President and the Cabinet,” Rep. Raskin added.
“Lightweight Jamie Raskin is a stupid person’s idea of a smart person,” White House spokesperson Davis Ingle fired back. “President Trump’s sharpness, unmatched energy, and historic accessibility stand in stark contrast to what we saw during the past four years when Democrats like Raskin intentionally covered up Joe Biden’s serious mental and physical decline from the American people.”
Rep. Raskin's Letter to Trump's Physician
Earlier in the month, Rep. Raskin sent a correspondence formally requesting Capt. Sean P. Barbabella – President Trump’s physician – to “conduct a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment” of the president and to report the results to Congress, according to MEDIAITE.
In the letter, Raskin expressed concern for recent “incoherent, volatile, profane, deranged, and threatening” comments by President Trump, citing his Easter weekend threats to Iran, that he argued exhibited what experts said were “signs consistent with dementia and cognitive decline.”
