Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) has filed a motion to expel Representative Eric Swalwell (D-CA) from Congress, following accusations of sexual harassment and assault that continue to grow.
The accusations began over the weekend, when four women, including social media content creator Ally Sammarco, came forward with allegations of Rep. Swalwell inappropriately touching them, sending unwanted sexual texts or images, or taking advantage of them while drunk. In one alleged instance, he left the victim bruised and bleeding.
Rep. Swalwell denies the accusations, but mounting pressure forced him to suspend his California gubernatorial campaign.
Rep. Luna is a leading voice in demanding that Rep. Swalwell face accountability for his actions, posting heavily on social media about the developing story over the weekend.
"I am calling on @RepSwalwell to resign from office. Idk in what parallel universe we are living in that elected members of congress begin to choose politics and party BS over basic human dignity," Rep. Luna posted on Friday. "I have called for Republican members to do the same when they are caught doing corrupt and morally bankrupt crap. Dem leadership needs to do the same."
On Saturday, the Florida congresswoman condemned Democrats for allegedly not supporting Swalwell's resignation or expulsion, writing, "So the Dems don't want Swalwell to be governor of California, but he can stay a member of Congress? Are we running a halfway house for sexual predators in Congress now? No. He should not be allowed to stay in Congress."
As a result, Luna announced the introduction of a motion to expel Swalwell from Congress, but issued a final warning on Sunday, not just to Swalwell but to Representative Tony Gonzalez (R-TX), who is caught in his own sexual harassment and assault scandal.
"This is the last chance for corrupt members of Congress to resign and keep some sliver of personal dignity. It is better to resign than to be expelled… but if THEY do NOT decide to do the right thing, we WILL vote to expel them," she posted. "@RepSwalwell @RepTonyGonzales, NO one will protect you for what you have done. Resign NOW or face expulsion by your colleagues, party, and country.
