In a show of solidarity, every single Democrat in the House of Representatives (except for Texas' Rep. Henry Cuellar) voted against the SAVE Act, the voter integrity legislative measure Republicans lawmakers filed to prevent illegal immigrants from voting in U.S. elections.
The bill to keep illegal immigrants from voting in future elections passed by a final vote count of 223-206 with 3 members "not voting."
"The House has kept its promise and delivered the SAVE America Act for the American people. Now it’s the Senate’s turn to send it to President Trump’s desk," stated Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R).
"83% of Americans agree! Photo ID and proof of citizenship in elections is important. This is not controversial, it’s common sense," said Rep. Kat Cammack
While the SAVE Act passed the House of Representatives, passing over in the Senate could be a problem for Republicans, as Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski (R) has already signaled that she does not support the measure.
Why are some Republicans and just about every Democrat opposed to what appears to be a very good bill that would protect voting rights and the integrity of the ballot box?
The SAVE Act would mandate proof of citizenship (show ID) for anyone looking to vote in federal election, and pressure states to clean up their voter roles of individuals that are not eligible to legally vote, like illegal immigrants.
As expected House Democrats contend that the bill would serve as a voter suppression vehicle.
Florida's Democratic Caucus is comprised of Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Maxwell Froxt, Kathy Castor, Jared Moskowitz, Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, Lois Frankel, and Frederica Wilson.
