Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced the arrest of Alexander McKinnie and Kara Morrison this week for allegedly defrauding tens of thousands of dollars through Florida's Medicaid program.
“Medicaid fraud is a clear example of theft from taxpayers,” Uthmeier said in a release. “In Florida, our Medicaid Fraud Control Unit will safeguard public funds and aggressively pursue anyone who exploits these programs.”
According to the release, McKinnie allegedly submitted tens of thousands of dollars in false claims for non-emergency medical transportation gas reimbursements for trips that never transpired.
More specifically, McKinnie fraudulently billed the Medicaid program more than $65,00 for medical services that were never provided. Morrison, who herself submitted $7,000 in false reimbursement claims, helped out with the scheme.
The Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit led the investigation into the pair. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office arrested McKinnie on the charges, while the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office arrested Morrison.
McKinnie has been charged with one count of Medicaid Provider Fraud over $50,000 and one count of Organized Scheme to Defraud, which are both first-degree felonies. McKinnie faces up to 30 years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted on the charges.
Morrison has been charged with one count of Medicaid Provider Fraud of less than $10,000 and one count of Organized Scheme to Defraud, which are both third-degree felonies. Morrison faces up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fines if convicted of the charges.
The Office of the State Attorney for the Eighteenth Judicial Circuit of Florida will prosecute the case moving forward.
Uthmeier has been active as attorney general since assuming the post in February 2025, including arrests related to human trafficking, child pornography, criminal alien sexual predators, and retail theft.
In addition, Uthmeier announced the conviction of a Bloods gang leader linked to several violent crimes across the state earlier this month.
