Florida Congressman Carlos Gimenez (R) blasted Republican representatives in the Senate for voting in favor of the War Powers Resolution that aims to curb President Donald Trump’s control over Venezuela and remove U.S. troops from the country.
“Let me be clear: this vote will not stop our mission in Venezuela. What President Trump has achieved in capturing narcoterrorist dictator Maduro is nothing short of extraordinary — Trump has taken a sledgehammer to our hemisphere’s equivalent of the Berlin Wall,” Rep. Gimenez shared in a post on X.
The congressman continues, claiming that the entire region is “grateful & our country is so much safer” and that it is “unfortunate that some Senate colleagues decided to vote with the regime in Caracas today.”
He finished his post, affirming that the U.S. will not stop fighting until Venezuela has successfully transitioned into a democracy.
Also included in Rep. Gimenez’s post is an even more scathing statement released by President Trump on Truth Social.
The President slams Republicans, telling them that they should be “ashamed of the Senators that just voted with Democrats in attempting to take away our Powers to fight and defend the United States of America,” before going on to name-drop each Republican senator who voted for the passing of the resolution.
Trump claims the vote “greatly hampers American Self Defense and National Security, by impeding the President's Authority as Commander in Chief.”
Gimenez calls the War Powers Act unconstitutional and in violation of Article II of the Constitution.
“In any event, and despite their 'stupidity,' the War Powers Act is Unconstitutional, totally violating Article II of the Constitution, as all Presidents, and their Departments of Justice, have determined before me,” Trump said.
A Senate vote, further debating on this topic, will be taking place next week.
The Republican senators who voted in favor of the resolution are:
- Susan Collins (R-ME)
- Josh Hawley (R-MO)
- Lisa Murkowski (R-AK)
- Rand Paul (R-KY)
- Todd Young (R-IN)
