James Buchanan (R-Sarasota) released a football-themed campaign video in his bid for Senate this week. The ad, titled “Trenchwork," describes Rep. Buchanan's leadership skills on the gridiron while advocating his work at the state capitol.
“Sometimes it’s about clearing a path so others can succeed,” Buchanan said in the video. "Whether on the field or in the legislature, I’ve always believed leadership is about doing the work others don’t see.”
Rep. Buchanan played fullback at Cardinal Mooney High School from 1997 to 2000. The 6-2, 240-pound star committed to Florida State University in 2001.
The video begins with a bit by former Cardinal Mooney Head Coach Mike Dowling, who describes Buchanan as a "big, strong fullback" and a "great blocker inside" with breakaway speed to get through the line of scrimmage.
Rep. Buchanan is running for Senate District 22. SD 22 covers Sarasota County and part of Manatee County on the southwest side of Florida.
He is looking to succeed Sen. Joe Gruters (R-Sarasota), who is term-limited and cannot seek reelection in 2026. Rep. Buchanan currently represents House District 74, which also covers part of Sarasota and Manatee counties.
"In Tallahassee, I've kept my head down, doing the work for the families I represent, the single mom working two jobs, the small business owner struggling to make payroll, the retirees wondering if they can afford to stay. Those are the people I think about every time I cast a vote," Buchanan continued.
Rep. Buchanan went on to highlight his accomplishments in the Legislature, including improving water quality, reducing flood risks, advancing first responder training, and helping to reduce property taxes.
He also promised to work with the Florida governor and President Donald Trump to "deliver real results" for the district.
"Leadership is not about headlines. It's about hard work, accountability, and standing strong for the people you represent," Buchanan said. "In football, games are one of the trenches; in public service, he changes lives."
The SD 22 general is set for Nov. 3, 2026.
