Former North Carolina Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R) is looking to make a political comeback in the sunshine state. Will Florida voters get him back in Congress?
After being voted out of the House in 2022, Rep. Cawthorn set his sights on Florida, and he has just announced that he will run for Florida's 19th congressional seat. The seat is currently represented by Rep. Byron Donalds (R), who is vying for the governorship.
The 30-year-old Republican announced this week that he had been pushed to run for Congress after the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the CEO of Turning Point USA.
During an interview with Fox News Digital, Rep. Cawthorn explained his intention to run for office.
"After Charlie Kirk's assassination, I knew that there was really no option," he expressed. "I've decided to run for Congress again."
Rep. Cawthorn added that his goal is "to make sure [the people of Florida] have amazing representation in Washington, D.C., because I know exactly what happens in the swamp."
Rep. Cawthorn was the youngest member to be elected to Congress since 1964. However, he was defeated by Rep. Chuck Edwards (R) in the Republican primary for North Carolina's 11th congressional district seat, resulting in him being a one-term Congressman.
Soon after, he was hit with several controversies that put him out of the political spotlight.
Most recently, Rep. Cawthorn was arrested for failing to show up to court over a traffic violation.
In a campaign video, the former Republican Congressman reiterated his support for President Donald Trump (R), who endorsed him in his re-election bid in North Carolina.
"I'm running for Congress to stand with President Trump, defend our conservative values, and fight to stop the radical left every single time," he declared.
According to Ballotpedia, six Republicans are currently vying to succeed Rep. Donalds, who is vacating his seat to run for the top post in Florida.
