Four Republicans helped Rep. Ilhan Omar (D) avoid a censure, and Rep. Cory Mills (R) is among those Republicans. The vote garnered ire from conservatives, who questioned the Florida Republicans' rationale in voting against the censure, and Rep. Mills has now responded to the concern.

In a video posted on social media, Rep. Mills discussed the recent effort to censure Rep. Omar after her remarks regarding Charlie Kirk.

Citing the impeachment efforts against President Donald Trump (R), Rep. Mills urged Republicans to not use the same tactics that he argues have been used against conservatives.

"This is not going to become a retaliatory tit-for-tat," he said in the video.

He suggested that Kirk would not agree with censuring Omar over here remarks, commenting that Kirk "was a man who believed in open dialogue. He was a man who didn’t rush anyone away from a microphone."

“While we grieve the loss, that doesn’t mean that two wrongs make a right," he emphasized, adding that "this is about upholding our Constitution."

The effort to censure Rep. Omar was led by South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace (R), who criticized Rep. Mills over his vote, accusing him and other Republicans of stifling "free speech."

The Florida Republican urged his GOP colleagues to rethink their strategy, suggesting in his social media post that they should instead "Open investigation into alleged Marriage Fraud 8 U.S.C. Code S 1325 (c), Immigration and Nationality Act violation (8 USC 1325), or incest law."

"If we're trying to make sure that this type of rhetoric doesn't get out, and that it doesn't take hold, elevating someone and making them a free speech martyr is not going to achieve that," he explained in the video.

Everyone says they want a Constitutionalist in Congress to go ahead and defeat “the swamp,” but at the end of the day, sometimes we have to take unpopular decisions to maintain our constitutional principles," Rep. Mills admitted.

Nebraska Rep. Mike Flood (R), Colorado Rep. Jeff Hurd (R), and California Rep. Tom McClintock (R) joined Rep. Mills in voting against the censure.
