President Donald Trump’s signing of the “One Big Beautiful Bill” last month cuts clean energy incentives for corporations and boosts demand for local fossil fuel production.

In response, a group of Florida lawmakers, including Rep. Kathy Castor (D), Rep. Vern Buchanan (R), and Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R), have introduced the Florida Coastal Protection Act, a bipartisan bill that would permanently ban drilling within 125 miles of Florida’s Gulf Coast.

The bill was introduced as the west coast of Florida is still reeling and recovering from Hurricane Ian in 2022 and Hurricanes Milton and Helene in 2024. Locals remain cognizant that another powerful hurricane can decimate potential Gulf Coast oil drilling operations and, in turn, harm local infrastructure and environment.

In January 2025, one of the Biden administration’s last moves was implementing a ban on all offshore fossil fuel drilling operations as a means of preventing "irreversible damage” to vulnerable coastal landscapes.

However, upon President Trump’s entrance into office, the administration reversed Biden’s ban, citing a national “energy emergency” and restoring access to 625 million acres of federal waters for oil and gas development.

Previously in April, a similar coalition of legislators introduced the same bill, and in a press conference, Rep. Castor said that “Florida is a special but fragile place, and our way of life depends on clean water. Dangerous offshore drilling can devastate both our environment and our economy, posing huge risks to everything that makes Florida special.”

She also said that offshore oil drilling would drastically harm Florida’s tourism and fishing industry, “the lifeblood of our coastal economy in the Sunshine State.”

Rep. Buchanan, remembering the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, expressed the potential dangers that oil drills so close to the coast can pose for the local economy and environment.

“While I support responsible investments in American energy, we must also recognize the unique importance of protecting Florida’s coastline,” said Rep. Buchanan. “The Deepwater Horizon disaster in 2010 showed just how devastating an offshore spill can be to our economy, environment, and way of life.”
