Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier warned of possible legal action on Monday against a Life Time Fitness gym in Palm Beach Gardens after it allegedly was allowing men into its women's locker room.
"If Life Time Fitness does not immediately reverse this dangerous policy, my office will take swift legal action," Uthmeier said. "Florida is a law and order state, and we will not back down from the fight to keep this state safe, strong, and free."
Uthmeier's remarks come after a complaint was made against the gym.
"Instead of following Florida's Civil Rights Act, they've decided to let men into women's locker rooms. That is wrong, and we are not going to stand for it," Uthmeier said. "Let me be clear. Florida law protects spaces designated for women. No local ordinance or woke corporate policy can override that."
In 2023, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill into law requiring Florida public restrooms, including changing rooms and locker rooms, to be designated for use based on a person's sex at birth.
The law covers educational institutions, detention facilities, correctional institutions, juvenile correctional facilities, and public buildings. However, it generally does not apply to private businesses like gyms.
In his remarks, Uthmeier accused Life Time Fitness of trying to circumvent the law behind a local Palm Beach County ordinance.
"Life Time Fitness tried to hide behind a misread county code, but the law is crystal clear. And so is my message. Men do not belong in women's restrooms or locker rooms, period," Uthmeier said.
According to its website, Life Time Fitness has ten locations (or soon to be) in Florida. They also have locations across the country.
