Two South Florida congressional leaders from either side of the aisle are teaming up to protect one of America's most important resources. Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) want to preserve the Everglades, Florida's marquee gem, by securing funding to protect its drinking water, wildlife, and bolster it from extreme weather events that affect the state.

Reps. Diaz-Balart and Wasserman Schultz sent a letter to President Donald Trump advocating for the Everglades as part of his 2026 Fiscal Year 2026 budget request, calling it vital to Florida's "prosperity and environmental resilience."

"Restoration efforts are essential to enhance water quality, preserve tribal lands, bolster resilience to natural disasters, and sustain the economic benefits derived from a healthy Everglades," the letter reads.

Both lawmakers cited economic benefits for Everglades restoration, including creating 440,000 jobs over the next 50 years.

"These benefits stem from improved water quality, enhanced tourism, increased property values, and more robust commercial and recreational fishing industries," it added.

They also emphasized restoration for the Everglades' biodiversity. Moreover, funding could help mitigate the spread of the Burmese python, Florida's invasive yet premier apex predator.

"Healthier habitats resulting from these efforts support more wildlife, including manatees, crocodiles, and various bird species, thereby enriching the state's natural heritage," the letter continued.

Along with Diaz-Balart and Wasserman Schultz, 19 other Florida congressional leaders signed the letter. They include Reps. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) and Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL), as well as Florida gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds (R-FL).

"Together, we ask your administration to continue a commonsense vision for Everglades restoration - a prime example of America's ability to restore the environment while supporting the economy, livelihoods, and the way of life for millions in Florida," the letter said.

"We respectfully request the inclusion of robust funding for the Everglades, adhering to all applicable rules and regulations. By doing so, we can preserve this irreplaceable national treasure for future generations while continuing to enhance Florida's health and economic vitality," it continued.
