With a continuing resolution likely on the horizon, Republicans want to include the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) recently described the measure as “Republican extremism,” prompting a response from Senator Rick Scott (R-FL), a co-sponsor of the bill.
The SAVE Act includes provisions to ensure that only United States citizens – not illegal immigrants – can vote in U.S. elections by requiring proof of citizenship in order to vote in federal elections.
In June, the New York Post reported that 49 states in the Union are actively providing voter registration forms without the necessary proof of citizenship.
“There is currently no requirement on federal voting forms to provide proof of US citizenship, though it is illegal to falsely claim one is a citizen or for a non-citizen to cast a ballot in a federal election … If an applicant attests that they are a US citizen, that is considered valid on its face and the person is registered to vote,” wrote Josh Christenson of the New York Post.
Sen. Scott took the opportunity to call out his upcoming opponent, former Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D-FL), whom Scott describes as “hand-picked” by Leader Schumer. Former Rep. Mucarsel-Powell recently told Newsweek that the GOP is using the SAVE Act as a “false talking point to divide,” arguing that it is already illegal for undocumented immigrants to vote.
Republicans – including Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) and Sen. Scott – believe there aren’t enough safety measures put in place.
"Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, who claims she is not a socialist, went to Washington and voted with self-proclaimed socialists AOC and Ilhan Omar 93% of the time,” said Scott campaign spokesman Will Hampson. “Now, socialist Debbie and radical Chuck Schumer believe keeping illegals from voting is Republican extremism. The people of Florida disagree and think the only extremism is Debbie continuing to stand with her socialist squad and illegal aliens, not the American people. It's sad to see anyone, even a socialist, put illegals over the American people. Florida voters will once again kick Debbie to the curb and reject her socialist, pro-illegal aliens voting, threat-to-democracy record."
Floridians will be able to decide between the two candidates on Nov. 5.
