Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) recently announced a reintroduction of the heavily-panned bipartisan border deal in the upper chamber of Congress. Several Republicans led by Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) recently held a news conference on Capitol Hill announcing their opposition, including Senator Rick Scott (R-FL), who accused Sen. Schumer of "not worried about solving the [border] problem" and saying Americans are "all fed up with what they have done."
Democrats have accused Republicans of voting against the bipartisan border deal in February to maintain the border crisis as an election issue. Still, Sen. Schumer's reintroduction of the bill comes as the White House has considered taking executive action to prevent illegal crossings.
Thus, Senators Blackburn and Scott turned the Democrats' accusation on its head, saying they are only reintroducing the bipartisan border deal to save face ahead of the November election.
As Sen. Scott noted, the border crisis "is the number one issue in the state [of Florida]. People are worried about the border. People are worried about fentanyl deaths," describing a recent roundtable he held with families who lost relatives to the notoriously deadly synthetic opioid.
"And they know who did it," Scott continued, "they know Joe Biden did it. They know Joe Biden's policy of open borders killed their family member."
Additionally, the Florida Senator described how many illegal immigrants are criminals in their home countries, bringing their illicit activity with them as law enforcement struggles to keep up with the surge in crime.
"I talked to law enforcement. They are dealing with an unbelievable amount of crime. Criminals are coming in, [and] as we know [in] Venezuela, [Nicolas] Maduro has emptied his prisons to send all of the criminals here," as Scott described.
But by resurrecting the despised bipartisan border deal, Scott said, "What Chuck Schumer is worried about is [that] he is only worried about the election. He is not worried about solving the problem."
"It is not a bill to secure the border; this is a bill that codifies what Biden has done, and we are not going to do it. We are all fed up with what they have done. They made this country less safe," Scott concluded.
