Cammack Introduces Resolution Banning Foreign Flags on House Floor

Share

When the controversial $95 billion foreign aid package passed in the House last week, many Democratic lawmakers celebrated by waving Ukrainian flags on the House floor, drawing ire from Republicans. Among them was Representative Kat Cammack (R-FL), who has introduced a resolution to prohibit members of the House from bringing in or displaying the flags of foreign nations on the floor.

Rep. Cammack's resolution specified that the House Sergeant-at-Arms would enforce the rule, and exceptions exist for lapel pins and exhibits used in speeches or debates.

In her press release, Rep. Cammack added, "We make serious decisions on behalf of the American people and their taxpayer dollars on the House floor. This business should be carried out beneath no other banner than our stars and stripes to remind us of who we represent and why this nation is the greatest in the history of the world. I'm glad to have earned the support of dozens of my colleagues who join me in standing up for the American people and putting our nation before all others."

Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL), one of the bill's cosponsors, was far harsher in his quote supporting the bill, saying, "Last Saturday, out-of-touch politicians sent tens of billions of your taxpayer dollars to Ukraine and rubbed it in our faces. Members of Congress should never wave the flag of another nation on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. I proudly stand with Rep. Cammack to ensure that disgraceful acts like this never occur again. Our government must put the American people first."

Another cosponsor, Representative Cory Mills (R-FL), had previously said he was "disgusted" by the waving of Ukrainian flags on the House floor when the bill passed, calling it "a sad day in Congress, it is a sad day in America when people proudly fly the flag of a foreign nation in our United States Chamber."

Similarly, Representative Anna Paulina (R-FL) shouted on the House floor, "Put the damn flags away!"

Other sponsors included Representatives Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), Laurel Lee (R-FL), and Ronny Jackson (R-TX).
