In an op-ed this week, South Caroline Governor Nikki Haley (R) has shared her thoughts on fixing healthcare for veterans. Writing for Seacoast Online, Haley shared that she intends on forcing Congress to fix veterans’ healthcare.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) announced this week that he will be pursuing the White House. Similarly, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott (R), whom Governor Haley appointed to the Senate in 2013, also announced his intention to pursue the presidency. While both have previously shared their impassioned support for helping veterans, Haley appears to be the first in outlining what her actions would be should she win the presidency.
Simply put, Haley commends Congress for trying to fix the pressing concerns, but she admits that there’s much to be done.
“The Department of Veterans Affairs is a bureaucratic maze, still plagued by red tape, delays, and lack of transparency,” Haley laments, noting that “it would be challenging for the most experienced government lawyer to navigate this mess, let alone our veterans who are transitioning military to civilian life.”
To elicit a change, what Haley is proposing is that “members of Congress should live with the same VA healthcare as our veterans.”
“They should experience the same delays, get the same bureaucratic runaround, and endure the same frustrations as our heroes,” Haley explained, adding that although members of the House claim to understand what veterans go through, they really don’t.
“After decades of well-meaning but insufficient reforms, the best way to get Congress to act is to make it personal. Let’s make Congress a stakeholder in our veterans’ care,” she wrote.
Haley is the wife of a combat veteran, so she shares that this is a deeply personal issue for her. She called on Congress to stop providing “empty promises” and that they should get to work on resolving this long-running concern.”
