The upcoming election is proving to be just as combative as the last two. The Republican presidential primary became even more crowded this week as both South Carolina Senator Tim Scott (R) and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) announced their candidacies. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has shared his disdain for Republicans in the past. In response to DeSantis' presidential campaign, AMLO has now trashed the presidential hopeful.
President Obrador became heavily critical of Republicans after Florida Rep. Mike Waltz (R) and Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R) introduced legislation that would authorize military use against Mexican cartels. This drew the ire of Obrado, who pushed back against the lawmakers, arguing that Mexico was much safer than the United States.
In making his announcement, Senator Scott endorsed the idea of enacting military use against the cartels, and President Donald Trump (R) has also endorsed the idea.
One threat that Obrador issued was that if Republicans pursued this effort, he would involve himself in the upcoming election to ensure that Republicans lose. This has incited controversy, and while Obrador hasn't provided many comments regarding the 2024 election, he has now issued a response to DeSantis' candidacy.
"I hope the Hispanics of Florida wake up and don't give him any votes, that they don't vote for those who prosecute migrants, those who don't respect migrants," said Obrado, making it clear that DeSantis is not his top choice to lead the United States.
Texas and Florida have been at the forefront of the conversation regarding illegal immigration, and both states have enacted measures to address immigration concerns. In his announcement, DeSantis vowed to build a wall, affirming his hardline stance on immigration.
Though Obrado warns that Hispanic voters should reject DeSantis, he attracted a considerable amount of support in the 2022 midterm elections, decidedly winning his reelection bid.
