It looks as though Florida Republicans are turning cancel culture against itself. State Senator Blaise Ingoglia (R) has introduced the "Ultimate Cancel Act" that would effectively rule the Democratic Party in Florida defunct due to its previous support of slavery in the Civil War.
According to WESH, this bill would "immediately cancel the filings of a political party, to include its registration and approved status as a political party, if the party’s platform has previously advocated for, or been in support of, slavery or involuntary servitude."
Because of this, voters registered as Democrats would be relabeled as having no party affiliation.
Furthermore, this does not mean that Florida Democrats could reorganize as a new party, only with a different name.
Sen. Ingoglia says this bill is effectively the end result of how cancel culture operates, given previous examples of buildings being renamed and statues torn down due to their associations deemed "problematic."
As such, "it would be hypocritical not to cancel the Democrat Party itself for the same reason," Ingoglia adds.
Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-FL) stated that "tyrants dictate one-party states."
"Tyrants dictate one-party states. The list of dictators who did it is long and very ugly. Ask anyone who fled Cuba, Russia or Germany. Now the @FloridaGOP wants to add Florida to that list? These radical extremists can’t be serious."
New Florida Democratic Chair Nikki Fried replied to Rep. Wasserman-Schultz's remark, saying that she is "spot on" and that "this level of government and state sanctioned control is straight from the playbooks from the darkest corners of dictatorships throughout our history."
"@DWStweets is spot on. This level of government and state sanctioned control is straight from the playbooks from the darkest corners of dictatorships throughout our history. @FlaDems will stop at nothing to protect our freedoms and our precious democracy."
In response to Fried, Sen. Ingoglia snidely remarks that Florida Dems "should be thankful" this bill does not ask for money raised in Jefferson/Jackson Dinners be returned.
"Hey @NikkiFried …Florida Dems should be thankful I’m not asking them to return all the money they’ve raised previously from their Jefferson/Jackson Dinners."
