Gimenez Heads Subcommittee on Transportation & Maritime Security

Over the weekend, Florida Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R) announced that he will serve as the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security.

Announcements of committee assignments continue to roll in as South Florida Republicans take leadership roles.

Gimenez, who formerly served as Mayor of Miami-Dade County, has been chosen to serve as Subcommittee Chairman on the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security.” In a statement, he shared his thoughts on the leadership position, expressing what he plans to do in the role.

“As Chairman of the Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security, I look forward to working with Chairman Mark Green and my colleagues to hold the Biden Administration accountable for its disastrous open border policies which have created a migratory crisis across America, including our very own Florida Keys,” Gimenez said.

Tennessee Rep. Mark Green (R) praised the team, calling it a “solid team of leaders” that will “get to work on delivering solutions to the most pressing issues facing our homeland today.”

“Each of these Members is uniquely qualified to lead the Committee’s bold and aggressive agenda,” Green added, noting that the United States’ “threat posture looks very different than it did even just a few years ago and there is no room for error when it comes to the defense of our homeland.”

A press release from Gimenez's office highlights that he represents "the Florida Keys, which boasts our nation's southernmost border." Dating back to August of last year, "tens of thousands of people have been encountered in the waters off the coast of Florida in the largest migratory crisis we have experienced in decades." Because of this, Gimenez argues that he's in a position to be a voice for South Florida and the Florida Keys, pursuing a way to craft "common sense legislation that protects our maritime borders."
