Florida Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R) held a joint presser this week in Miami. In the press conference, Salazar was joined by Mexican officials to denounce human rights violations of USMCA.
During the press conference, Salazar denounced Mexico’s effort to use “Cuban Doctors in violation of human rights clauses within the United States Mexico Canada (USMCA) trade agreement.”
The press conference was held at the American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora, and two elected officials from Mexico’s government were present – Senator José Alfredo Botello Montes ad Deputy Mariana Gómez.
Salazar commented that Cuba is financially profiting from the effort. “Doctors are being swindled, exploited, and trafficked,” she said, noting that “Mexico is getting cheap labor.”
“The Mexican government is exploiting Cuba’s most valuable good, their human capital. They are funding the Cuban dictatorship and ignoring international conventions, human, and labor rights,” the Florida Republican added, sharing that “The Mexican President recently expressed that conservatives who have a problem with using Cuban doctors can go to hell.”
In response to the effort, Salazar directed an answer to President Lopez Obrador, saying “that he will be the only one who is going to hell for siding with evil forces and being an accomplice to human misery.”
In April, Rep. Salazar called for an investigation into Mexico cooperating with the Cuban regime. Salazar directed a letter to the Department of Labor’s Office of Trade and Labor Affairs, and in a press release, Salazar’s office adds further insight into why the effort is an example of human trafficking.
“Cuban doctors have their wages stolen by the regime, are forced to sign contracts against their will, and their families are in danger of reprisal if they do not comply,” the press release explains.
The money taken from these missions is instead directed to the Cuban regime, which is “used to further oppress the Cuban people.”
