Rep. Stephanie Murphy Endorses Ultra-Progressive Karen Green

Share

With just under two months until voters head to the polls, retiring Rep. Stephanie Murphy's (D) will not be facing the Republican congressional nominee Cory Mills .

Instead, the self-described moderate Rep. Murphy has endorsed the ultra-progressive Karen Green, who announced the endorsement Thursday morning in a tweet.

"ENDORSED! "I’m proud to endorse Karen Green and know she will honorably serve the people of Florida’s 7th congressional district." I'm excited to continue the work, thank you @RepStephMurphy," Green's tweet reads.

Green is facing a tough uphill battle with Mills. Her campaign funding has been less than ideal, only able to garner  about $28,000 during the primary election cycle, while her opponent Cory Mills was able to loan himself $1.5 million, outside of the $323,678 he received in donations.

Additionally, Green's progressive agenda is unlikely to draw many voters in the Republican-leaning District 7. Her website describes her campaign mission as, "secure employment opportunities and increase educational opportunities. Secure civil liberties for immigrants and other minority communities. Fight for women’s rights, youth development, universal healthcare, religious freedoms, social justice, and climate advocacy." Obviously not all of these sound inherently bad, but when Green has received endorsements from Rep. Anna Eskamani (D-FL-42), Rep. Carlos G. Smith (D-FL-49), and Rep. Darren Soto (D-FL-9), easily some of the most left-wing representatives in Florida, convincing the residents of District 7 to vote for her will not be easy.

Mills told The Floridian  that "the people of Florida's 7th District want to move away from one progressive in Stephanie Murphy, but instead the Democrats are offering an even more progressive candidate who will 100% support and vote with AOC and "the squad." With 22 endorsements from prominent Republicans, it looks like Mills is going to have an easy victory in November.
