With the primary election looming around the corner, Floridians will choose who will challenge Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) in November. In a message to supporters, Governor DeSantis recounts his time in office, arguing that “the free state of Florida is thriving.”
“When I was elected Governor in 2018, Florida was seen as a bellwether for American politics known for its historically close races.”
While Florida will host numerous closely watched races in the upcoming election, political pundits argue that Republicans have a chance of ushering a “red wave” that could affect the 2024 election.
In August, Democrats will choose either Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried (D) or Florida Rep. Charlie Crist (D) to face Governor DeSantis, but the Governor argues that Florida has “led the way with commonsense freedom-focused policies, providing a blueprint for the rest of the country to follow.”
As part of his achievements in office, Governor DeSantis lists the following:
FREEDOM – I’ve kept Florida open, protected jobs and businesses, and safeguarded against mandates by banning vaccine passports.
ECONOMY – Due to Florida being open, we have outpaced the nation in jobs, economic growth, new business formations, and tourism. We now have a record budget surplus.
EDUCATION – I guaranteed the ability of parents to send their kids to school in-person, enacted substantive protections for parents’ rights in education, and secured the largest increase in teacher compensation in state history.
PUBLIC SAFETY – I signed legislation prohibiting local governments from defunding law enforcement, secured $1k bonuses for all police, fire, and EMT personnel, and enacted the largest law enforcement recruitment and retention package in the nation.
ELECTION INTEGRITY – I protected Florida elections by strengthening voter ID laws, banning ballot harvesting, and prohibiting “Zuckerbucks.”
CONSERVATION – I secured a record $3.3 billion to safeguard Florida’s natural resources, improve water quality, and restore Florida’s Everglades.
"Florida has attracted people from all over the country who value one thing above all: freedom," DeSantis added.
Recently, California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) released an advertisement, criticizing Governor DeSantis for limiting the freedom of Floridians.
