Last year brought America waves of crises of proportions we have not seen in ages. Now, US Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL) thinks it is all but over and claims that America's food supply shortage is the next big national security issue the Biden Administration will have to take on.
"As a Floridian, and serving as the lone Republican on House agriculture, this is a really, really important topic because people don't realize the unique position Florida is in. We are a major agricultural producer, our top economic driver is agriculture for the state of Florida. And when you look at the position we're in, in terms of our seasons, we're pretty much in line with several of the harvesting seasons in Mexico and Central America," said Congresswoman Cammack on Florida's agricultural economy.
However, Rep. Cammack sees a grim future for the agricultural industry under President Biden (D), "And where we have challenges is in a loophole that is in our most recent trade agreement. And it is the seasonal and perishable provisions that we really, really struggle with. So when you look at say our row crops or blueberries, we're competing with products that are being dumped on our markets, and it is being done legally. And that is something we have to be aware of."
Cammack added, "I think the danger is not just one particular issue, its not just trade, its a multitude issue. It is the taxes, we keep seeing from administration to administration tax code changing, makes it very hard to plan ling term of passing down the family farm." The Congresswoman emphasized, "The regulations, especially under this administration, I mean they want to strangle you to death, so it is a real struggle for our farmers."
After hinting at failures of the Biden Administration, Rep. Cammack briefly stated to conclude her interview with The Floridian, "I think we have unique challenges in Florida in the agriculture world, and it is a national security issue. Nobody thinks about food as a national security concern, but a nation that can't feed itself is not secure.
